4th November - Date of National unity

According to Gregorian calendar on the1st November in 1612 folk citizen soldiers and their leaders merchant Kuzma Minin and general Dmitry Pozarsky took Kitay-gorod by storm. On the 5th November commanders of Polish garrison signed capitulation and on the 6th November garrison gave in.

In 1649 tsar Alexey Michailovich announced the 22nd October of Julian calendar the national holiday in honer of heir to the throne. Because of the difference between Julian and Gregorian calendars and dates removal now it is the 4th November (accordig yo Gregorian calendar).

Beginning from 2005 Russia celebrates the Date of National unity as a memory of 1612 events. After a long break (1917-2005) the tradition renewed. The national day off 4th November especially makes glad orthodox believers. In their calendar this day is called the Date of Kazan icon of God's mother.
